8 Weeks Out: Book Movers & Make Big Decisions

This is the most important window. Decisions made (or delayed) here affect everything else.

📅
Set your move date
Mid-week, mid-month moves are 10–25% cheaper and have better mover availability. If your date is flexible, choose Tuesday–Thursday in the middle of the month.
🚚
Get 3 mover quotes
Start here — movers book up weeks in advance during May–August. Compare at least 3 quotes. Always request a binding or not-to-exceed quote in writing.
📦
Start decluttering
Long distance moves are priced by weight. Local moves are priced by time. Either way, fewer items = lower cost. Start selling, donating, or trashing now — not the week before.
📜
Create a home inventory
Walk through every room and list major items. This helps movers give accurate quotes and helps you ensure everything arrives. Take photos of valuables for insurance purposes.

6 Weeks Out: Logistics & Notifications

🔒
Book your mover
After comparing quotes, book your top choice. Get the final quote in writing with your pickup date, delivery window, and all included services before signing anything.
💼
Notify your employer
If relocating, handle HR paperwork, remote work arrangements, and any employment transitions now. Give at least 4–6 weeks notice for a smooth transition.
🏠
Research your new area
Schools, healthcare providers, grocery stores, transit options. The more you know before arrival, the less overwhelming the first weeks will be.
📦
Order packing supplies
Boxes, tape, bubble wrap, furniture pads, and markers. Order 20% more boxes than you think you need — you will always underestimate. Buy from Home Depot or ULINE, not the moving company.

4 Weeks Out: Start Packing & Change of Address

📍
File change of address with USPS
Go to usps.com and file your change of address. Takes 5 minutes. Mail forwarding starts within a week. Do this 4 weeks out so nothing important gets lost in the transition.
🏭
Update address for key accounts
Banks, credit cards, insurance, subscriptions, voter registration, driver's license, vehicle registration. Make a list and work through it systematically over 2–3 weeks.
📦
Pack non-essentials first
Books, seasonal items, decor, extra linens, out-of-season clothes. Label every box with contents AND destination room. You'll thank yourself at the new place.
📐
Transfer medical records
Request records from your doctor, dentist, eye doctor, and any specialists. Transfer prescriptions to a pharmacy near your new home. This takes longer than expected — start now.

2 Weeks Out: Pack Everything Except Essentials

📦
Pack all non-essential rooms
Guest rooms, basement storage, garage, hobby areas. Leave out only what you need to function for the next 2 weeks. Pack and seal every box completely — half-packed boxes get damaged and confused on move day.
🔩
Disassemble furniture you're keeping
Bed frames, large desks, bookshelves. Keep all hardware in labeled zip-lock bags taped to the furniture piece. Reassembly is much easier when you're not searching for screws.
Use up perishables
Plan meals around clearing out your freezer and pantry. Donate non-perishables you won't use. Movers won't transport open food, plants, or hazardous materials.
📞
Confirm everything with your mover
Call your moving company to confirm pickup date, time, and any special items. Ask who your point of contact is on move day. Confirm the delivery window for long distance moves.

1 Week Out: Final Preparations

💵
Get cash for tipping
Plan $20–$50 per mover for a local move, $50–$100 for long distance. Tip in cash directly to each mover at the end of the job. ATMs at the new location may not be convenient.
🏧
Pack an essentials bag
Keep a separate bag with 3 days of clothes, phone chargers, toiletries, medications, important documents, and a change of bedding. This bag stays with you — not on the truck.
Schedule utility setup at new home
Electricity, gas, water, internet. Call now to ensure services are active on move-in day. Arriving to no electricity or hot water makes the first night miserable.
🚗
Arrange parking for the moving truck
Reserve parking near both addresses if needed. In cities, contact your building management about elevator reservations. Long carries from parking add time and cost.

First 2 Weeks in Your New Home

📝
File damage claims immediately
Long distance move damage claims must be filed within 9 months of delivery. Local moves vary by company. Don't wait — document and file as soon as you find damage.
🏭
Update remaining accounts
Any accounts you missed in week 4. Check all mail forwarded from USPS to catch anything you forgot.
💳
Update driver's license and vehicle registration
Most states require this within 30–60 days of establishing residency. Check your new state's DMV website for exact requirements and deadlines.
🎹
Schedule piano tuning (if applicable)
Wait 4–6 weeks after a local move and 6–8 weeks after long distance before tuning your piano. This allows it to acclimate to the new environment's humidity and temperature.
